12 injured in massive fire at Sharjah tower

A massive fire engulfed a 49-floor tower in the UAE’s Sharjah Tuesday night, injuring 12 people.

Footage circulating on social media showed debris falling from the Abbco Tower falling to the ground below.

Gulf News reported that of the 12 people injured in the blaze, five were hospitalised.

It noted that the fire broke out on the 10th floor of the tower at 9:04pm. The building has 49 floors, with 38 residential floors, two for services and nine for parking. Each floor has 12 flats.

While the authorities haven’t provided an official cause for the fire, ITV cited building and safety experts who said it could have been caused by the material used in the building’s sidings — aluminium composite panel cladding.

Those experts said that the cladding used in UAE buildings wasn’t designed to meet stricter safety standards and wasn’t put in with breaks to slow or halt possible blazes.

The fire was controlled after two hours.
